Can you trek Manaslu without a guide? What the rule means

The short version
No. Manaslu is a restricted area, and the Restricted Area Permit is only issued through a licensed agency, for trekkers with a licensed guide for the whole route. Your permits are checked at Jagat, Namrung and Dharapani, so there's no way around it. What you do keep is a lot of freedom: you can go solo, groups top out at eight, and the pace is yours. The rule is also a big reason the trail stays so quiet.
The rule, and where it's checked
No, you can't trek Manaslu without a guide. The circuit runs through a government-designated restricted area, and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) that lets you in is only issued through a licensed trekking agency, for trekkers who have a licensed guide with them for the whole route.
You can't apply for the RAP yourself in Kathmandu. And there's no quiet back door either, because the paperwork is checked on the trail:
| Checkpoint | Day | What's checked |
|---|---|---|
| Jagat | Day 3 | RAP and MCAP, as you enter the restricted area |
| Namrung | Day 5 | MCAP again |
| Dharapani | Day 13 | ACAP, on the drive out through the Annapurna side |
At each one an official logs your permits before you go on. Your guide carries the file and does the talking. For how the three permits fit together, see what the restricted area means for your trek.
Why we don't mind the rule
If you've walked parts of Nepal on your own before, a mandatory guide can feel like a loss. We understand that. But on Manaslu the rule is a big part of why the trail is worth walking.
Nobody turns up on a whim. Every trekker on the circuit has booked through an agency, holds a permit for the season, and walks with a guide. That's the main reason Manaslu still sees only a fraction of the foot traffic on Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit. Above Namrung you walk through Tibetan-influenced villages with mani walls and prayer wheels, and at Samdo a trade trail still runs toward the Tibet border. None of it feels like a queue.
The quiet is the thing people come for. The guide rule is how it stays that way.
What your guide actually does
A guide on Manaslu isn't someone walking ahead pointing at the path. Most of the job is the stuff you'd otherwise worry about.
Before you land. We file the RAP, MCAP and ACAP, so the permits are waiting when you arrive in Kathmandu. You bring a passport valid for at least six months and a few passport-sized photos.
At the checkpoints. Jagat, Namrung and Dharapani are your guide's problem, not yours.
Every evening above 3,000m. Your guide checks how you're handling the altitude, with a pulse oximeter, at every stop above 3,000m. It takes a minute, and it's the kind of check a lot of people skip when they're on their own and tired.
On the Samagaon rest day. Your guide helps you choose between the longer hike toward Manaslu Base Camp, past Birendra Tal to around 4,800m, and the gentler walk up to Pungyen Gompa. Either way you sleep at Samagaon (3,530m) again.
On pass day. You leave Dharamsala (4,460m) in the dark for the 5,106m Larkya La, and it's an 8 to 9 hour day. Your guide sets a rhythm you can hold for hours and keeps the stops short so you don't get cold. Our Larkya La crossing guide walks through the whole day.
If something goes wrong. Rescue infrastructure on Manaslu is thinner than on the busier trails. Your guide carries a first aid kit and has an evacuation plan ready for every trip, which is a lot more reassuring than working it out alone at 4,000m.

The independence you keep
More than you'd think. You can go solo: on Manaslu we can file the RAP for a group of one, which isn't possible on Kanchanjunga, Makalu or the Tsum Valley. That's covered in full in trekking Manaslu solo.
Our groups top out at eight, so even a full departure is small. With fewer people, the pace bends to you. Walking days run from 3–4 hours on the short ones up to the long pass day, and there's room to stop on the suspension bridges below Namrung or sit a while at Lho.
And you carry less. Porters take the shared gear, so above 3,500m you're never hauling more than a daypack. Plenty of independent trekkers tell themselves they don't mind a heavy pack. Fewer still feel that way at Dharamsala.
If you normally trek on your own
Then you're probably the kind of trekker Manaslu suits. You know how your body handles altitude, you don't need hand-holding, and you're after somewhere quieter than the routes you've already done.
Tell us that when you get in touch. Say how you like to walk, whether you want long days or slow ones, and which way you're leaning on the rest day. The route and the overnights are fixed by the itinerary, but the way the days feel is something we can shape with you. The day-by-day Manaslu itinerary shows exactly what each day holds.
Planning a guided Manaslu trek
