The short version
Everest Base Camp is the most famous trek in Nepal and one of the busiest. The Manaslu Circuit is a similar effort on a much quieter trail. EBC is an out-and-back to the foot of Everest with lodges and services all the way. Manaslu is a 15-day loop around the world's eighth-highest mountain, over the 5,106m Larkya La, in a restricted area where you need a Restricted Area Permit and a licensed guide. If you want the icon, go to Everest. If you want the big-mountain days without the crowds, choose Manaslu.
The two treks side by side
We run the Manaslu Circuit and don't sell Everest Base Camp, so the Manaslu column below comes from our own itinerary, and the Everest column sticks to the basics. For current EBC details, ask an operator who runs it, such as Everest Base Camp Trails.
| Manaslu Circuit | Everest Base Camp | |
|---|---|---|
| Restricted area | Yes | No |
| Permit stack | RAP, MCAP, ACAP | National park and local permits |
| Guide | Licensed guide mandatory | Check current rules with an EBC operator |
| Route shape | Loop around Manaslu | Out-and-back |
| Big day | Larkya La crossing, 5,106m | The day to base camp |
| Our itinerary | 15 days, Kathmandu to Kathmandu | We don't run it |
| Traffic in season | Quiet | Very busy |
| Lodges | Simple teahouses, basic below the pass | Dense, with plenty of services |
Crowds: the main difference
EBC is famous for good reasons, and in spring and autumn a lot of people walk it. The trail through Namche and Tengboche is busy in October. If you like company and plenty of lodges and services, it's a good fit.
Manaslu is a restricted area. Every trekker needs a Restricted Area Permit, which only a licensed agency can arrange, and must walk with a licensed guide. That paperwork keeps casual traffic off the trail. More people are finding out about Manaslu these days, but a day on the trail between Jagat and Samdo still looks nothing like the Namche to Tengboche corridor. We go into that in is Manaslu still quiet?.
Out-and-back versus a loop
EBC walks up the Khumbu valley to the foot of Everest and comes back mostly the same way. You see a lot of the same trail twice.
The Manaslu Circuit is a loop. You walk up the Budhi Gandaki from warm, low Machha Khola (869m), through the Nubri villages of Namrung, Lho, Samagaon and Samdo, over the Larkya La, and down the other side to Bimtang and Tilije. Every day is new ground, and the landscape changes from bamboo and hot springs to glaciers and back to pine forest.

How hard each one is
We describe Manaslu as about as close as you'll get to an Everest Base Camp-grade trek that still feels quiet. The effort is similar. Our 15-day route has 10 walking days, gains roughly 3,700m of net elevation, and ends in an 8 to 9 hour pass day above 5,000m. Your highest night is Dharamsala (4,460m).
The difference is where the hard day falls. On Manaslu it's a crossing: once you start the Larkya La there's no easy way to turn back halfway, so the itinerary builds up to it with a rest day at Samagaon and a staging night at Dharamsala. Our honest grade for Manaslu explains the pacing.
Teahouses and comfort
You sleep in a teahouse or basic lodge every night on Manaslu, never a tent. Rooms are simple twin-share, toilets are shared, and above Samagaon showers are bucket-only. The bakeries and long menus of the Everest trail mostly aren't here. Dal bhat with refills, noodle soups, momos and Tibetan bread are.
If you've done EBC, Manaslu will feel simpler.
Permits, guides and cost
Permits. Manaslu needs three: the RAP, the MCAP and the ACAP, because the route finishes through Dharapani on the Annapurna side. You can't get them yourself. We file them, and the fees are in our price. Our Manaslu restricted area post explains what each one does.
Guide. A licensed guide is mandatory on Manaslu. Solo trekkers are welcome, as long as the guide comes too.
Cost. Our 15-day Manaslu Circuit is $1,650 to $2,100 per person, depending on group size, with permits, guide, porters, lodging, meals and transport included.
Safety. Rescue infrastructure is thinner on Manaslu than on Everest. Your guide carries a first aid kit, a pulse oximeter and an evacuation plan, and you need travel insurance with high-altitude evacuation cover.
Choosing between them
- Choose Everest Base Camp if seeing Everest is the goal, you want the most infrastructure, and you're happy sharing the trail.
- Choose Manaslu if you want the same scale of mountains with far fewer people, and you like the idea of a loop and a real pass.
- If you've already done EBC, Manaslu is a natural next trek.
- If you want to see Everest but don't have two weeks to walk, an EBC helicopter tour gets you there and back in a morning.
The day-by-day plan is on our Manaslu itinerary, and the complete Manaslu guide covers season, difficulty and cost in one place.
Frequently asked
Is the Manaslu Circuit harder than Everest Base Camp?

Do you need a guide for Manaslu?
Yes, a licensed guide is mandatory on Manaslu. Solo trekkers are welcome, as long as the guide walks the whole route with them.
How long is the Manaslu Circuit?
Our itinerary is 15 days, Kathmandu to Kathmandu, with 10 walking days, a rest day at Samagaon and a buffer day at the end.
