Is the Manaslu Circuit still quiet? Crowds, honestly

The short version

Yes. More trekkers are discovering Manaslu, but a day on the circuit still looks nothing like the Namche to Tengboche corridor on the Everest trail in October. Manaslu is a restricted area: every trekker needs a Restricted Area Permit, which only a licensed agency can file, and must walk with a licensed guide. That keeps casual traffic off the trail. You'll share lodges with other groups in the bigger villages and at Dharamsala before the pass, and have long stretches between Jagat and Samdo almost to yourself.

What's changed

Manaslu is better known than it used to be, and more trekkers are finding out about it every season. You won't have the circuit to yourself.

The permit system, which is the reason it stays quiet, hasn't changed.

Why the rules keep it quiet

Manaslu sits inside a government-designated restricted area. To walk it you need:

  • A Restricted Area Permit, which you can't buy yourself. Only a licensed trekking agency can file it.
  • A licensed guide for the whole route.
  • The MCAP and the ACAP alongside the RAP, checked at Jagat, Namrung and Dharapani.
  • A booking inside the government's seasonal permit windows.

On an open trail you can turn up and start walking. Here you can't, and that alone filters out a lot of casual traffic. What the Manaslu restricted area means goes through the rules in detail.

People often say Manaslu feels like EBC or the Annapurna Circuit did decades ago: real teahouses, a real trail and long stretches where you won't see another group. We think that's still fair. Our comparisons with Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit go further.

Where you'll see other trekkers

In the bigger villages. Samagaon is the largest village on the circuit, and with most groups taking a rest day there, it's where you're most likely to share a lodge.

At Dharamsala. Everyone crossing the pass stages here the night before, in a few basic lodges right below the Larkya La. It's the one night when the trail funnels together.

On the pass. You'll cross the Larkya La with a handful of other groups, all leaving by headlamp.

In autumn. Autumn is the busier of the two seasons, though even in October the trail sees a fraction of the Everest traffic. Spring brings rhododendron lower down and slightly warmer nights. Our spring vs autumn guide compares them.

Where you'll have it to yourself

Between Jagat and Samdo there are long stretches where the only people you pass are porters and the families who live in the valley. Our photo journal shows those days, from the gorge to the yak pastures outside Samagaon.

What we do to keep it calm

We cap Manaslu groups at 8 trekkers, and one person on their own is fine, so your group never fills a lodge. On the Samagaon rest day you choose between a walk toward Manaslu Base Camp, the shorter one up to Pungyen Gompa, or a quiet day in the village.

Quiet enough?

If you're coming from Everest or Annapurna in high season, Manaslu will feel quiet. If you're picturing an empty wilderness, expect company at Samagaon and Dharamsala and quiet nearly everywhere else.

The full plan is on our Manaslu itinerary, and the Manaslu Circuit guide covers the rest.

Frequently asked

Is the Manaslu Circuit crowded?

No. More trekkers come than before, but Manaslu is a restricted area, so every trekker needs a Restricted Area Permit through a licensed agency and a licensed guide. That keeps casual traffic well below Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit.

Where will I see other trekkers on Manaslu?

Mostly in the bigger villages like Samagaon and at Dharamsala, where everyone stages the night before the Larkya La.

Is Manaslu quieter in spring or autumn?

Autumn is the busier season. Spring is the less busy of the two, with rhododendron in bloom lower down.

Why is Manaslu less crowded than Annapurna?

Because it's a restricted area. You can't trek it independently: the RAP is issued only through a licensed agency, and a licensed guide must walk with you.

How big are your Manaslu groups?

Eight trekkers at most, and solo trekkers are welcome.
